Hinduism...If Mahabharata occurs before the Veda times, then why is Krishna not mentioned in the Vedas?

Krishna is present in Mahabharata as a central figure and Mahabharata seems to have taken place much before the Vedas were written. While in Bhagavad Gita Krishna says that he is God, why isn't he mentioned in the Vedas at all?
