"Financial crisis": a reason not to be charitable?

Doesn't it seem that many people/companies are using the excuse of the financial crisis as a way to be stingy. Some may be feeling the crunch, but I don't believe that it is so bad that everyone needs to hold on to their purse strings in every aspect of life.
