Why was spontaneous generation discredited as a theory?

Because it was demonstrated that all the examples which were charged to spontaneous generation could be explained by referring to bacteria, eggs laid in mud, larvae tunneled into dirt or mud, and animals which could enter through smaller spaces than imagined.
